Skiing in the Modernist Age

Winter Sports in Italy - Franz Lenhart - ski poster

I don't envy their equipment (low leather boots and scary bindings), but I do envy their style. I've loved old travel posters for years and just came across this auction catalog of vintage tourism and ski posters. While some of these are well out of my price range, a few are temptingly affordable and unsold. Browsing the posters is a pleasantly nostalgic way to spend a sunny Friday afternoon.

Mountain Bikes Could Save Ski Resorts

Angel Fire Bike Park

As I write this it is February 6th and 61°F at my home, which is roughly 15°F warmer than average. Given that 2014 was the warmest year on record, what is the fate of ski resorts? While snowfall is becoming less reliable, the mountains are still steep. Mountain Biking is a way to bring warm weather recreation to otherwise quiet mountain resorts.

My Annual Tradition

TSV - Party on Kachina Peak

I have a simple, but satisfying, tradition of skiing on my birthday with a good friend. Whether on steep terrain or mellow, with great snow or not, I do my best to make turns celebrating another successful lap around the sun. On this particular day the terrain was great and the snow was too (we found a few rocks regardless). Here are some shots from my birthday ski at Taos Ski Valley.

Taos Ski Valley

The Evolution of Taos Ski Valley

Ernie Blake hiking the Ridge at Taos Ski Valley

After decades of ownership by the Blake family, Taos Ski Valley (TSV) has been purchased by Louis Bacon. This change has left many intensely loyal Taos skiers wondering what is in store for their favorite mountain. While the Taos Ski Valley 2010 Development Plan details future plans there are still unanswered questions. I interviewed Gordon Briner, C.E.O. and Peter Talty, Director of Properties to find out more about the changes in store for Taos Ski Valley.

Backcountry Skiing 101

Heading Out of Bounds

It's mid-winter (north of the equator) and a skier's thoughts will turn to the backcountry. If you've never hiked outside of a ski area, or you want a refresher, here are a few short videos to introduce you to skiing (and snowboarding) out of bounds. Thanks to Sarah Carpenter and Outdoor Research for posting these how-to videos.

While I check my pack and gear I hope the snowpack near you is deeper and more solid than what is in the mountains near me.
